A mother will sacrifice anything for her children. A husband will risk everything to save his wife. Manor House will take them all.

Just some of the many great reviews on Goodreads.

“I really enjoyed Ghosts of Manor House. It's the type of ghost story that works in a psychological way playing to your greatest fears: the fear of a child dying, the fear of your family, sister, children being in danger.”

ABOUT GHOSTS OF MANOR HOUSE

Edmund and Mary Wilder are very much in love. But the death of their young son, Tommy, has shattered their family. Edmund is determined to bring them back together, drawing on the only bit of strength he has left—his love for Mary and their daughter, Stephanie. But Mary sinks deeper into depression while little Stephanie’s anger grows. Edmund flounders in his attempts to rescue his family from the brink of collapse and doesn’t know where to turn.

Then Mary receives an invitation for the family to become guests at Manor House, a seemingly quaint Bed and Breakfast. This, she assures her husband, is the answer to all their troubles.

Edmund arrives ahead of his family to spend a couple days working on his long-delayed novel. But his growing curiosity about the old house leads Edmund to an encounter that will change him forever.

What will you sacrifice for love?

Oldstyle Tales Press

“Intelligent, witty, unapologetically gothic, and delicious to read, his debut novel is a wonderful example of the haunted house trope – written with a modern audience in mind.”

Dark Treasury

“Ghosts of Manor House by Matt Powers isn't your typical haunted house story. It sucks you right in. I had to be careful reading it on the subway. I was so into this book I almost missed my stop.”

The Books of Daniel

“Ladies and Gentlemen, I present to you: Manor House. This house meets most of my criteria. Its ghosts respect and honor their home. So let’s give it up for Ghosts of Manor House, an excellent novel by Matt Powers.”

Manor House

The house is most certainly alive. The house has been alive a long time, when it all began no one knows for certain. Its first real memory of self was when the house realized it was lonely. That moment came when the other arrived. That is how the house thought of the other entity at first, just the other. It, the house, was one. The other force was simply another. Having another nearby, some other being to feel and understand was good. In contrast, the house realized that before the other it was alone and lonely. The house knew it never wanted to be lonely again.

GHOSTS OF MANOR HOUSE

Note from the Author

Ghosts of Manor House is a story about a house and what it does to survive. It is also a love story. What a mother will do for her children; what a husband and father will endure to be with his family. And what a house will do so it won’t be lonely—to always have company and guests.

When writing a book, people tell you to develop your characters and soon they write themselves. This became true for me, but the characters that spoke to me the most were Manor House and its partner, Mr. Travels. These two entities drew me into their world. The others are satellites, flies caught in the web of old spirits. Like the characters in this story, Manor House drew me in and captured me.

When I started to write this story, my goal was simple—write something that is suspenseful and unsettling. Write a ghost story. Something not too obvious. Ghosts don’t jump out at you. There is no gore. I wanted a story that will creep up on you, and linger at the back of your mind. I wanted a story that fits with my memories of watching The Haunting, The Changeling, and The Shining. I wanted to write a story that conjures the chills I received while reading Haunting of Hill House and Hell House. I wanted to create a story with suspense and thrills that keeps the reader guessing. Most important, I wanted to write a story that has characters on a journey. A journey that readers will want to come along with and be enticed by. It was a big order to fill and a challenge to write. I hope you will enjoy my tale.
